Mice with deep skin wounds can grow new hair, scientists say in a finding that offers hope for a baldness remedy for humans.
The mice regenerated hair at the site of the wound via molecular processes similar to those used in embryonic development, according to the research, published in the journal Nature.
The findings show mammals possess greater regenerative abilities than commonly believed. While some amphibians can regenerate limbs and some reptiles can regenerate tails, regeneration in mammals is far more limited.
Dr George Cotsarelis, a dermatology professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia who led the study, said the findings dispel the dogma that hair loss is permanent in people and other mammals, and that once they are lost new hair follicles cannot grow.
Cotsarelis said the findings could pave the way for remedies for male-pattern baldness and other types of hair-loss. He said the idea would be to apply compounds to get epidermal cells to turn into hair follicles.
The regenerated follicles functioned normally, cycling through the various stages of hair growth, and the hair was indistinguishable from neighbouring hair with a key exception - it lacked pigmentation and was white.
The otherwise brown-haired mice had patches of white hair marking the site of the wound.
Cotsarelis said the white-hair issue may not materialise in any baldness remedy in people because the human pigmentation system differs from that in mice.
The researchers made relatively large wounds on the backs of adult mice, and found that if a wound reached a certain size new hairs formed at its center, with the skin undergoing changes mimicking stages of embryonic hair-follicle development.
Dormant embryonic molecular pathways were activated, sending stem cells - master cells able to transform into other cell types - to the damaged skin.
The stem cells that gave rise to the regenerated follicles were not stem cells usually associated with hair-follicle development.
"They're actually coming from epidermal cells that don't normally make hair follicles. So they're somehow reprogramd and told to make a follicle," Cotsarelis said.
The researchers also found a way to amplify the natural regeneration process, causing mice to grow twice as many new hairs by giving the skin a specific molecular signal.
Cotsarelis is involved with Follica Inc., a privately held start-up company that has licensed the patent on the process from the University of Pennsylvania. He said it probably would be more than five years before a treatment was possible.
Cotsarelis also envisioned treating wounds in a way that would leave skin with hair follicles, sweat glands and other normal attributes that would be functionally and cosmetically much better than a scar.
Dr. Cheng-Ming Chuong, a professor of pathology at the University of Southern California who was not involved in the study, said it proved the principle that hair can regenerate from adult skin, but cautioned that human skin differs from mouse skin.
"Repair and regeneration appear to be in competition," Chuong said by email.
"Since fast-closing wounds help the survival of wild animals, repair often dominates regeneration. In the practice of medicine, physicians are trained to close wounds as soon as possible, thus leaving not enough time for regeneration to occur.

Types Of Warts : Warts are benign thickenings in the skin or mucous membranes caused by the human papilloma virus. Warts are also known as verrucae or condylomata. Warts are very common - sometimes warts on the hands, verruca vulgaris, plantar warts and plane warts resolve without treatment but the other times they do not. Warts can be found in individuals of any age and in any location. They are particularly common in children and teenagers. Generally warts occur in those who are sexually active. There is a balance between the virus and the individual’s immune system. Situations that reduce immunity will make it easier for the warts to spread and become more susceptible. There are more than 50 different types of HPV Symptoms .These are DNA viruses. The different types are given numbers. It appears that each number either gives a specific type of wart or a specific location. There is an uncommon type of human papilloma virus that can have a potential to develop cancers especially in the cervix. These are known as Type 16 and 18. Warts are transmitted by skin to skin contact, although plantar warts may well be transferred from moist floors. The transmission of warts depends in part on the immunity and susceptibility of the individual involved. Warts have an incubation period of many weeks to many months.
Types of Warts: Verruca Vulgaris (the common wart) These are thickened bumps called papules or plaques. They have a rough surface and frequently will have small tiny spots which are from blood vessels that have clotted. They are most commonly seen on the hands, elbows and knees. Flat Warts se are flat-topped, smoother looking warts. They are brown or skin coloured. They are most commonly seen on the face of women. They are spread easily by shaving. Plantar Warts are seen on the under-surface of the feet. They are thickened. They can be confused with corns or calluses. Occasionally they can be quite widespread involving large surfaces. They tend to grow into the skin rather than coming outwards as most other warts.Genital Warts appear in the genital peri-anal skin. . They can look like common warts or sometimes they are skin coloured, small papules. They vary in size from tiny papules to much larger typically warty growths. Occasionally they are pigmented. There is a subgroup of these warts caused by HPV 16 and 18 which have been named bowenoid papulosis. They have a small chance of becoming cancerous. Some of the genital warts have been associated with carcinoma of the cervix, Bowenoid papulosis and Bowen's disease.Warts are usually obvious to the experienced doctor. A biopsy can confirm the diagnosis although it is not commonly required. There are specific tests to type the human papilloma virus although these are not done routinely. NYC Dermatology Board Certified Dermatologist NY Dermatology takes care of all these condtions.
Vitiligo<dermatology> This disorder is characterised by regions of otherwise normal skin of nonpigmented white patches of varied sizes, often symmetrically distributed and usually bordered by hyperpigmented areas. Hair in the affected areas is usually, but not always, white.
Keloid scars :Occasionally scars enlarge spontaneously to form firm, smooth, hard growths called keloids. Keloids may be uncomfortable or itchy, and may be much larger than the original wound. They can arise soon after the injury, or develop months' later. It is not known why keloids appear. While most people never form keloids, others develop them after minor injuries, even insect bites or pimples. Keloids may form on any part of the body, although the upper chest and shoulders are especially prone to them. Dark skinned people form keloids more easily than Caucasians. Keloid scars are usually just a cosmetic problem. They never become malignant. As wounds heal, scar tissue forms, which at first is often red and somewhat prominent. Over several months, a scar usually becomes flat and pale. If there is a lot of tension on a healing wound, the healing area is rather thicker than usual. This is known as a hypertrophic scar.Hypertrophic scars generally settle in time but keloids may prove resistant to treatment. The following measures are helpful. Dressings should be worn for 12 to 24 hours per day, for at least 8 to 12 weeks, and perhaps for much longer. Self-adhesive polyurethane scar reduction patches Silicone gel dressings Pressure dressings Surgical excision (but may result in a second keloid even larger than the original one) Corticosteroid injection, repeated every few weeks Cryotherapy. Superficial X-ray treatment soon after surgery. Pulsed dye laser. At NYC Dermatology Board Certified Dermatologist we specialize in keloids.
Pseudfolliculitis barbae ( Razor bumps) dermatology> Erythematous follicular papules or, less commonly, pustules resulting from close shaving of very curly hair. The growing tips of hairs consequently reenter the skin adjacent to the follicle producing ingrown hairs. Pseudofolliculitis of the beard area is very common in blacks This is especially problematic for men of African descent and other people with curly hair. If left untreated over time, this can cause keloid scarring in the beard area.
.
Molluscum Contagiosum<dermatology> A skin condition caused by a pox virus infection, distinguished by small dome-shaped papules (bumps) on the face, upper trunk or extremities. Current treatment is mainly cosmetic. It often involves application of liquid nitrogen to the papules as a means of excising them.
Filling Substances
Collagen replacement therapy:Collagen treatment is a safe, non-surgical procedure that softens line and furrows on the face.Tiny quantities of collagen are injected under the line or scar through very fine needles, boosting the skin's natural collagen. The effects can be maintained by small ‘top-up’ collagen injections two or three times a year. What is collagen?Collagen is a natural substance that is found in skin, muscle, tendons and bones and provides structural support. In the dermis (the mid-layer of skin), collagen is made by fibroblast cells. It forms a fibrous network on which new cells can grow. Modified Collagen Could Be a Boon for Medicine
... scar tissue, control the growth of tiny new blood vessels in tissues destined for implantation, and ... engineer Michael (Seungju) Yu described the new collagen modification process and its potential .
Through the natural processes of aging, collagen in the dermis is gradually lost and contributes to the formation facial lines. Injectable bovine collagen is made of sterile, purified collagen from cow skin. Human collagen implants are highly purified and isolated from human skin grown in a laboratory. The cells have been grown for the last ten years or so primarily to manufacture living skin-equivalents to treat burns and ulcers. When injected into the body's skin both forms of collagen are accepted as if they were the body's own collagen, forming a network of collagen fibres. Zyderm® and Zyplast® are popular brands of injectable bovine collagen. Others include Resoplast®. Human collagen brands include Dermalogen®, Cymetra, CosmoDerm® and CosmoPlast®. Zyderm® and Cosmoderm® are used for fine lines and Zyplast® and CosmoDerm® are used for deeper furrows. Collagen injections can be used to improve the skin's contour and fill out depressions in the skin due to scars, injury or lines. Facial lines and features that can be smoothed out using collagen implants include: Frown lines that run between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) Smoker's lines which are vertical lines on the mouth (perioral lines) Marionette lines at the corner of the mouth (oral commissures) Worry lines that run across the forehead (forehead lines) Crow's feet at the corner of the eyes (periorbital lines) Deep smile lines that run from side of the nose to corners of the mouth (nasolabial furrows) Cheek depressions Redefining lip border, Acne Scars Other facial scars, providing they don't have a sharp edge. Collagen treatment can be combined with other cosmetic procedures, including botulinum toxin injections and laser resurfacing.

Non - Surgical Nose Job
The non-surgical nose job is a new and exciting alternative available to patients interested in improving the shape of their nose without undergoing invasive surgery. The benefits of nose jobs without surgery are faster results, quicker healing time, and little or no pain.
What is a Nose Job Without Surgery?
Patients who are interested in nose surgery may be surprised to find out they are actually candidates for a non surgical nose job. This popular new treatment is an excellent alternative to the traditional rhinoplasty procedure.
A nose job without surgery involves using injectables such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, Restylane®, or Radiesse® to shape and contour the nose. Unlike a surgical procedure, these fillers allow patients to obtain quick results with little or no healing time.
For more than 300,000 Americans a year Rhinoplasty, or a "nose job," has helped correct such unsightly nasal bumps and bulges. For many more, however, this type of correction would never be an option. Well, for patients who can't handle the bumps anymore, but aren't yet ready for major surgery, New york City Doctor Gary Rothfeld has been doing: the Non-Surgical Nose Job.
Since the fall of 2005, Dr. Rothfeld has been performing this non-surgical, minimally painful procedure, and has corrected many noses to date. Dr. Rothfeld, who runs the NYC Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery Center in Manhattan, New York has a lot of experience with minimally invasive procedures like Botox, Restylane, Radiesse and used that experience to correct nose deformities. Dr. Rothfeld used the same facial injections that he uses to correct wrinkles and crow's feet, but now in the nose to correct bumps and deviations.
Working With What You've Got
For this relatively painless procedure that can be performed in just minutes, Dr. Rothfeld a board certified dermatologist in NYC uses either Restylane, a product composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance produced naturally by the body, or Radiesse, a synthetic calcium composite. The facial filler of choice is injected into predetermined areas of the nose to help camouflage deformities. Dr. Rothfeld says that some patients are afraid it will make their nose look bigger, but, on the contrary, it simply evens out the nose and makes it look like one smooth line.
Sculptra, another long lasting filler, has been FDA for facial atrophy associated with HIV therapy. Made from micronized suture material, Sculptra can correct facial wasting with long term results after some treatment sessions.
The latest upgrade in the cosmetic world is Juvederm a competitive agent to restylane. Made of the same hyaluronic acid material, Juvederm has slightly different physical characterics that make this a softer agent for a certain patient population.
Each filler has different characteristics and depending on the needs of the patients both aesthetically and physically, Dr. Rothfeld at NYC Dermatology Board Certified Dermatologist will help patients find the appropriate treatment. Call to arrange for a consultation. over 18 years of experience with collagen and many years of exerience with popular wrinkle fillers.
Acrochordon (Skin Tag) <dermatology> A small outgrowth of epidermal and dermal tissue that may be pedunculated, smooth or irregular, flesh-coloured and benign.
Occur most often on the eyelids, neck and axillae, but may be seen almost anywhere on the skin. Most do not require treatment unless they are cosmetically displeasing
Hives (Urticaria) are pink swellings that can vary in size from as small as a pin to very large erythematous (red) plaques. Hives are red and sometimes itchy bumps on your skin. An allergic reaction to a drug or food usually causes them. Allergic reactions cause your body to release chemicals that can make your skin swell up in hives. People who have other allergies are more likely to get hives than other people. Other causes include infections and stress.Hives are very common. They usually go away on their own, but if you have a serious case, you might need medicine or a shot. In rare cases, allergic reactions can cause a dangerous swelling in your airways, making it hard to breathe - which is a medical emergency
Mole<dermatology> A benign pigmented skin lesion or nevus.

NYC dermatology Board Certified Dermatologist NY dermatology takes care of all these condtions Rosacea is a long lasting, non-scarring skin condition of the face that is often misdiagnosed as adult acne. It varies in severity and does not always worsen with time. Typically, you will experience inappropriate flushing that is not usually associated with sweating and/or persistent facial redness. It is common to have broken blood vessels (telangiectasias) on your cheeks. You may also experience bouts of inflammation that cause red papules (small bumps) or pustules. However, comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) are not part of rosacea. About 50% of those with rosacea suffer eye involvement, including such conditions as conjunctivitis, blepharitis, dry gritty eyes, and recurrent sties. Nose enlargement (rhinophyma) is uncommon and is mostly seen in men.Do I Have Rosacea?is a chronic progressive skin condition that causes inflammation and swelling of the face. As the disease progresses, small vessels and tiny papules begin to precipitate on and around the reddened area especially the nose.
Poison Ivy <botany> A plant that causes a marked allergic (contact) dermatitis in the majority of individuals.
Tinea versicolor: is a yeast infection of the upper layers of the skin. It appears as hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation patches and scaling. The infection is caused by a yeast-like fungus, which normally resides on the skin surface and it thrives in oily areas of the skin such as the neck, chest, and back. NYC dermatology Board Certified Dermatologist NY Dermatology takes care of all these condtions.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation(Dark Spots) Hyperpigmentation is discoloration of the skin at the site of a healed or healing inflamed acne lesion. It occurs more frequently in darker-skinned people, but occasionally is seen in people with white skin. Early treatment by NYC Dermatology -Dr. Gary Rothfeld Board Certified Dermatologist may minimize the development of post-inflammatory pigmentation (dark spots). Some post-inflammatory pigmentation may persist for up to 18 months, especially with excessive sun exposure. Chemical peeling may hasten the disappearance of post-inflammatory pigment
Hyperpigmentation - Brown SpotsLightening, Removing and Preventing Hyperpigmentation Probably one of the more distressing skin problems facing NYC patients is skin discoloration. Most frequently a result of sun exposure or hormones, these brown splotches and darkened areas can be an ongoing problem for someone of any age. What can be done to restore the skin to it's natural color and prevent this hyper-pigmentation from coming back?
About Melanin
First, it is essential that you understand why you have brown spots and patches in the first place. Skin gets it's color, whether light or dark, from melanin. Melanin is a pigment that your body produces. It determines the color of your skin, hair and eyes. An over-production of melanin shows up as brown patches and spots. There are typically three reasons your skin becomes overly-pigmented.I. Hyper-pigmentation from Sun ExposureOne of the primary functions of melanin production in your skin is to protect you from UV rays from the sun. A "tan" is the prime example of your body's melanin response to the sun. When the skin is assaulted by repeated exposure to the sun, you experience sun damage in a variety of ways and one of those is brownspots and hyper-pigmentation resulting from an over-production of melanin. This is the body's way of saying "too much"! Once the cycle of pigment over-production has started, it is difficult to stop it and usually medical intervention is required.II. Hyper-pigmentation (Melasma or Chloasma) from HormonesThe second most frequent cause of hyper-pigmentation is hormone changes. This may be a result of birth control pills, pregnancy or the various stages of menopause. Hormone shifts trigger the melanin cells to go into over-drive. This can happen even if you are not a sun worshipper. If you have hormone related pigmentation problems, you still need to be careful of sun exposure since it will make it worse.
III. Hyper-pigmentation from injury (termed Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation or PIH)
The third most common cause of pigmentation is a direct result of some type of injury to the skin. Typical pigmentation-causing injuries include
- Insect bites or itchy rashes
- Abrasions or cuts
- Acne or acne cysts
- Over-exposure to heat
- Hair waxing
- Improperly performed laser treatments
- Your body's response to injury is inflammation.Often you don't even see it as much of it can occur underneath the epidermis. This inflammation triggers melanin production and the result is a brown patch or stripes.
(This is one of the reasons you should always be very careful that you have medical treatments such as hair laser removal done in a dermatology office where you will have a medical professional operating medical equipment.)Solutions to Brownspots and Hyper-pigmentation - IPL Photofacial (fotofacial)
- Topical RX Treatment Programs
- Pigment Removal Laser
- Chemical Peels
- Cosmelan
Not all hyper-pigmentation can be completely removed. In some cases the best result is a "blending" of the affected areas so they are not as noticeabl
Dr. Rothfeld frequently has patients who come to him to "fix" their skin after visiting a poorly-trained laser "technician" who either used the wrong laser for their skin type or treated their skin at levels that were too aggressive. The reversal of such pigmentation problems requires a long series of treatment and rigorous adherence to a a strict sun protection program.
Prevention
Sometimes you won't be able to avoid pigmentation problems. Hormonal shifts are out of your control and an accidental injury is as well. But the most important preventive measures are
Sun Protection (or at least the proper use of an adequate sun-screen or sun block if you insist on "tanning")
Acne Control if you are prone to breakouts with Blue Light, Photodynamic therapy , or RX programs.
Proper Selection of Medical Providers for treatments that involve lasers, lights, chemical peels or exfoliation.
Seborrheic Keratosis is usually confused with warts, seborrheic keratoses are non-cancerous growths of the epidermal layer of the skin and appears as stuck on growth or in clusters of stuck on growths. The growths are usually brown, but can vary in color from light tan all the way to black. Dr. Gary Rothfeld Board Certified Dermatologist at NYC Dermatology NY Dermatology takes care of all these condtions.
Sun Damaged Skin (Wrinkles)Look Like? The appearance of sun damaged skin is well recognized, and is different from changes seen with normal chronological aging. The very smooth, fine, pale wrinkling associated with aging seen in the sun protected areas of the skin such as the buttocks are different from those of sun damage. Fine and coarse wrinkles are seen on sun damaged skin. There is a roughness to the skin and a laxity or looseness in advanced damage, patchy or mottled darker patches of increased pigmentation are seen also. Sometimes these patches become irregular and produce what are known as lentigos. In areas around the back of the neck a leathery texture and coarseness with deep lines is frequently seen, the skin may feel dry and scaly. Chronic sun exposure will in many produce a thickened layer in the upper dermis known as solar elastosis, which gives a yellowish chicken skin look. Some individuals will develop more blood vessels, known as telangiectasias or broken blood vessels. If damage is severe, thinning of the skin and bruising may be seen particularly on the hands and forearms. NYC Dermatology Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Rothfeld is trained in treating sun damaged skin. Please have your skin checked by a dermatologist.
Pre-Cancerous Changes of the Skin:The most common indication of chronic sun exposure most often seen in fair skinned individuals is actinic or solar keratosis. These are usually small reddish, or reddish brown rough areas on the skin with a hard surface. Sometimes the smaller lesions can be felt more easily than they can be seen. As they progress, they often develop a thick rough whitish scale. This is seen most commonly on the face, ears, bald scalp, and on the backs of the hands, the lower legs of women are also risk areas . These pre-cancerous growths are most common among fair skinned individuals. Actinic keratoses are pre-cancerous, which means they may become skin cancers. Any raised, reddish, rough-textured growth should be examined by Dr. Rothfeld at NYC Dermatology.
Skin Cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. The two most common types are basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer. They usually form on the head, face, neck, hands and arms. Another type of skin cancer, melanoma, is more dangerous but less common. Anyone can get skin cancer, but it is more common in people who Spend a lot of time in the sun or have been sunburned Have light-colored skin, hair and eyes Have a family member with skin cancer Are over age 50 You should have your doctor check any suspicious skin markings and any changes in the way your skin looks. Treatment is more likely to work well when cancer is found early. If not treated, some types of skin cancer cells can spread to other tissues and organs.

Over exposure to the sunlight including tanning is the main cause of skin cancer especially when it results in sunburn and blistering. Melanoma is a very serious form of skin cancer. . Although melanoma accounts for only about 4% of all skin cancer cases, it causes most skin cancer-related deaths. The good news is that melanoma is often curable if it is detected and treated in its early stages. Basal Cell Carcinoma is a form of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinomas are the result of sun damage to the skin. Basal cell carcinomas enlarge slowly and steadily and can invade neighboring tissue, like the eye, but they usually do not spread to distant parts of the body (metastasize). The only way to tell for sure if a skin growth is cancerous is to biopsy it. Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the skin is a form of skin cancer which is usually the result of long term sun damage to the skin. Squamous cell carcinomas enlarge slowly and steadily and can invade neighboring tissue, like the eye. They can also spread to distant parts of the body (metastasize) if not treated early. Venereology is a branch of medicine dealing with the study and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. It includes the study of HIV infection. A medical doctor specializing in venereology is called a venereologist. In some countries the speciality is combined with dermatology. The venereal diseases include bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic infections. Some of the important diseases are HIV infection, syphilis, gonorrhoea, candidiasis, herpes simplex, human papillomavirus infection, and genital scabies. venereal syphilis acquired its name from that of a swineherd in a poem by Hieronymous Frascatorius in 1530.Treponema pallidum is the causative organism
Acne is the most common skin disorder seen by doctors. In fact, it will affect almost every one of us at some time in our lives. It can happen at any time, but teenagers are the ones who get it most often. Acne can cause a great deal of embarrassment and anxiety. If it’s really bad it can cause people to become depressed which can lead to withdrawing from friends, and perform poorly at school or work. The following are visible signs of acne: Comedones: An early acne blemish is caused by blocked pores, and at first the skin does not look red and inflamed. These early blemishes are called open comedones (blackspecks/blackheads) and closed comedones (whiteheads). Papules and pustules: As these early spots get larger and inflamed, they become papules and pustules (pimples or zits).Nodules: Very large and deep lumps can also develop in some people, these are called nodules and cysts (like boils), and can be painful.Oily skin: The sebum production increases so that your skin looksand feels oily. Hyperpigmentation: After the inflammation subsides, the skin can be discolored by brown acne stains (called hyperpigmentation) and damaged by scars. Acne scars are common and may occur even in mild acne. NYC Dermatology Board Certified Dermatologist NY Dermatology takes care of these condtions. It is very responsive to treatment.
Seborrheic Dermatitis: is a inflammatory condtion usually on the scalp , the face involving the forehead , eyebrows nasolabial folds, cheeks, ears, and eyelashes. It can, however, sometimes affect other areas of the body. Hair loss tends to be rather rapid and often involves one side of the head more than the other.Alopecia areata affects both males and females. This type of hair loss is different than male pattern baldness, an inherited condition. Come to NYC dermatology Board Certified Dermatologist NY dermatology takes care of all these condtions and we will persist until the problem is clears.
Hair loss may be associated with aging, hormones (androgens) or genetic predisposition. The pattern of baldness in women is different from that of men.
